Why Replace Just One Tooth?

Many people assume that if they are missing a back tooth then they can go without it. This does make a certain amount of sense, or at least we think it does. No one will ever spot it and it probably will not impact your ability to chew much, but unfortunately that is not true at all. Our mouths are meant to have all of our teeth and missing even one can disrupt the delicate balance. The teeth next to the now-empty socket will no longer have anything to keep them neatly lined up, so they will move out of place. Below your gums, the jawbone will very quickly start to shrink. The bone weakens, increasing the likelihood of losing other teeth, starting a vicious cycle.

How We Can Replace a Single Tooth

There are a few different ways we can replace an individual tooth, but only one we strongly recommend. A very popular choice that many patients opt for is a dental bridge. Bridges are simple and often inexpensive, so why do we not recommend them? Because bridges are like a bandaid, they fix the surface problem of the missing tooth but do nothing to actually support your dental health. In fact, bridges actually harm your oral health. Bridges rely on abutments and dental crowns placed on healthy teeth. To place these crowns, those healthy teeth have to be shaved down. You can see why we do not recommend bridges.

Why We Recommend Getting a Single Tooth Dental Implant

Instead of replacing a single tooth with a dental bridge, we recommend getting a dental implant. Unlike bridges, implants do not hurt any of the rest of the mouth. Also, unlike bridges — or any other restoration — implants actually stop the shrinkage that happens after a tooth is lost. There are also other benefits to dental implants. They are extremely tough, meaning that they will not need to be replaced, while bridges eventually wear out.

How Do We Place Your Implant?

Getting a single implant is pretty quick, and you can usually get not only the implant, but also a temporary crown, during the same appointment. Sometimes other procedures may be required before we can place your implant. Many patients need bone grafting, and sometimes we will perform both an extraction and an implantation at the same time. While your implant fuses to your jaw, we will design and craft the crown or other prosthetic that will attach to the implant. This usually takes a bit of time as we want to make sure that your replacement is an ideal match with the rest of your teeth.
